Nurses Across The Borders

GOALS

To reduce to the barest minimum the mortality rate at any given disaster in the community by the provision of adequate quality care voluntarily for health promotion and maintenance.

To enhance and encourage public participation in supporting governments and non-governmental agencies in the provision of adequate health care delivery services and development of infrastructures.

To provide HIV / AIDS support programmes to infected individuals. To help them move from fear to hope, live positively and meaningfully with a sense of dignity and self rediscovery.

OBJECTIVES

Shift the focus on disease and hospital to promotion of health and community based care. Take a holistic approach to care.

Providing effective, preventive and curative and rehabilitative services

Instill a professional sense of responsibility amongst health care providers through enlightenment campaigns, seminars, symposia, workshops, advertisement, radio and T.V. Jingles, talk-shows etc..

Be active participants in multi-disciplinary and intersectional teams for health development. Promote inter NGO relationships thereby strengthening community development.

Provide a medium and encourage exchange programmes from country to country for shared ideas, information and education on adequate health care delivery services.

PREVENTIVE SERVICES Information, Education and Communication (IEC) approaches Community mobilization Intensification of the use of mass media in information dissemination.

CURATIVE SERVICES Compliment the efforts of government(s) and agencies in the maintenance and provision of health care infrastructure, through fund raising activities. Establishing standards of care Ensuring prompt and adequate distribution of drugs, equipment, materials and staff to our clientele in the service areas appropriate and relevant to each level of service. Provision and maintenance of community based clinics as support based care for everyone in need.

REHABILITATIONS SERVICES Charitable provision and distribution of relief materials to people in need during drought, famine, wars, crisis, communal conflicts, disasters, etc. irrespective of tribe, nationality, sex, religion and belief(s). Provision of training facility (for occupational therapy) to the disadvantaged within any given community as part of our community services. Social therapy by engaging/re-engaging the unwell to gainful employment or adequate compensation due to loss of gainful employment. Ensuring designs of health facilities that improve success to services by those with disabilities.

CAPACITY BUILDING / DEVELOPMENT Human Organize activities to ensure that up to date knowledge and skills regarding health care delivery are available and accessible to the community. Collaborate with both government and non-governmental agencies in the promotion of optimum health through training and retraining of health care providers and members of the public. Become sources of health information. Training of volunteers to acquire skills to respond to various health emergencies. Promotion of adequate awareness of current medical research, technological advances and practices, and their ethical implications in relation to human values.

ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

NURSES ACROSS THE BORDERS HUMANITARIAN INITIATIVE since inception began a silent membership drive across the globe and reaching out to like minds outside Nigeria. Today can boast of representatives ‘across the borders’. It is to the credit of members reorientation and refocusing to the ideals of NABHI that a silent revolution in attitudes and passion for humanity has begun in most of our health institutions.

2001 Some other activities included our ‘little’ support to victims of the Jos / Kano riots in 2001. Public seminar on Terrorism and Social Change, 24th October 2001 in collaboration with the National Conscience Party (aftermath of the WTC Terrorist Bombing). Support service and provision of relief materials to the victims of IKEJA BOMB BLASTS in Nigeria February 9 and 12 2002 in Lagos. Organised a public interactive seminar on: Re-awakening the Spirituality of the Nursing Profession in collaboration with Centre for The Right To Health – CRH May 21 2002. Lagos. Accredited Delegates / Participants to the UNITED NATIONS WORLD SUMMIT ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – JO’BURG 2002 – August 26 to September 4 2002. NABHI Executive President / CEO – Pastor Peters Omoragbon was appointed COORDINATOR of the Health and Environment Caucus of the Major Groups at the Summit. 2002 Organised a Training workshop for PASTOR’ WIVES FORUM on: Population, Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights – September 26th 2002. Lagos. Donated a box of books, CDs, DVDs, Journals to Development Alternative Resources Centre DARC, 7, Isaac John Street, GRA, Ikeja. Lagos- October 8th 2002. Organised a one-day seminar: The Youths and the HIV/AIDS Scourge For Christian youths, on HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign. November 26 2002. A special church service was held to mark the World HIV/AIDS DAY at Agape Generation International Church, 15, Ugbeje Aki Street on the Theme: LIVE AND LET LIVE. December 1st 2002 Lagos.

2003 Accredited to the World Forestry Congress Quebec Canada. September 21-27 2003. HYPERLINK "http://www.cfm3003.org" www.cfm3003.org Organised the 1st Annual Lecture for LATE SENIOR NURSING SISTER RACHEAL AKINPETIDE ON : OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS: THE CHALLENGES TO HEALTH WORKERS (In collaboration with Lagos University Teaching Hospital LUTH and Centre for Labor Studies)- November 19th 2003. Marked the World Aids Day with Prayers offered for victims of the disease at Agape Generation International Church. December 1 2003.

2004 PARTICIPANTS / DELEGATES to the First NATIONAL REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH SUMMIT Theme: Strengthening Reproductive Health in the Context of Sustainable Development, February 16-19 2004 Abuja. Coalition of Nigerian NGOs on New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD). NABHI is the Secretariat for the Coalition. Other NGOs includes: Project for Community Development, (PCD) Centre for The Rights to Health (CRH), Centre for Civic Education and Community Development (CECODEC). Collaboration with the KUDIRAT INITIATIVE FOR DEMOCRACY (KIND), for Women Empowerment, Theme: THE ROLE OF WOMEN ON STRUGGLE AND DEMOCRACY on going, first phase was 4th June 2004, Lagos. Commenced National Training Institute for Nurses / Midwives on “Towards Effective Nursing Management / Control of HIV /AIDS infection in Nigeria”. First Phase begun at the South – West Zone – October 19 – 22 2004. In collaboration with the Nursing & Midwiferies Council of Nigeria. Accredited participants to the 10th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10 ) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – UNFCCC, December 6 – 7 2004. Collaboration with Teachers Without Borders and Baylor International Pediatric AIDS initiative – Baylor College of Medicine USA in Training Workshop for ALL health Professionals on: “HIV curriculum for the Health Professional” University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital December, 2004.

2005 April 11 – 22nd 2005: Nurses Across the Borders represented by the Executive President / CEO Pastor Peters Osawaru OMORAGBON actively participated at the 13th SESSION OF THE COMMISSION ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA. April – May 2005: Nurses Across the Borders played active role in the NGO/DPI and CONGO co-hosted activity: The Civil Society Call for the Five Year Review of the UN Millennium Summit and the Millennium Development Goals Sponsored by the Millennium + 5 Network. Pastor Peters OMORAGBON Executive President / CEO ably represented the Organization and was copiously quoted in the Final Report by the NGO/DPI to the General Assembly in September 2005, (see page 21of the report). May 16th – 27th 2005: Nurses Across the Borders participated at the Fourth Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at the UN Headquarters NY. May 20th 2005: Nurses Across the Borders was recommended for admission to be granted SPECIAL STATUS with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations – ECOSOC by the UN ECOSOC Committee on NGOs. May 25th 2005: Nurses Across the Borders was INCORPORATED in the State of New Jersey USA, as a Not-for-Profit Organisation. June 1st 2005: Nurses Across the Borders in collaboration with the Communication Coordination Committee of the R.I. – NAB Partnership Platform For Curbing HIV/AIDS, honouring June 1, 2005 UNAIDS Program on: ‘The Threat of the AIDS Epidemic for the Least Developed Countries and its impact on their Development prospects’ made this presentation at the General Assembly interactive session / open forum UN Headquarters NY. HYPERLINK "http://www.ccc-un.org" www.ccc-un.org July 22 2005: The Certificate of Incorporation of Nurses Across the Borders was issued by the CORPORATE AFFAIRS COMMISSION – CAC (the Body set up by Statute in Nigeria to regulate ALL businesses in Nigeria) to Nurses Across the Borders Registration number RC: CAC/IT/: 19038. With this, Nurses Across the Borders Humanitarian Initiative becomes a legal entity with Tax-exempt status in Nigeria. JULY 25TH 2005: Nurses Across the Borders was FORMALLY ADMITTED into the Economic and Social Council of the UN, by the GENERAL Assembly of ECOSOC and SPECIAL CONSULTATIVE STATUS GRANTED as recommended by the NGO Committee of ECOSOC. By this development NAB-HI has the privilege of designating 5 REPRESENTATIVES each to the UN offices in NY, Geneva and Vienna, and has the RIGHT to participate in ALL UN ACTIVITIES. September 1st – 5th 2005: Nurses Across the Borders accredited to participate at the Launching of the Caribbean UN-NGO-IRENE & UN-NGO IRENE-HAITI In Port Au Prince, Haiti. Pastor Peters OMORAGBON and John OBASUYI were both accredited for the event. September 7th – 9th 2005: Nurses Across the Borders was accredited to the 59th Annual DPI/NGO Conference in NY at the UN Headquarters. Our representative for that event was our Deputy Executive President / Chairman Board of Trustees U.S.A. Branch Mr. Martin IDEMUDIA. September 16 – 30th 2005: Nurses Across the Borders accredited and participated at the PREP COM 3 of the World Summit on the Information Society at the United Nations Office in Geneva. The Executive President/CEO Pastor Peters OMORAGBON did participation. Pastor Peters OMORAGBON – Executive President / CEO led delegation. November 28th – December 9th 2005: Nurses Across the Borders as the ONLY NGO in Nigeria granted OBSERVER STATUS with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – UNFCCC was accredited and participated at the 11th Session of the Conference of the Parties-COP 11 and MOP1 Meeting in Montreal Canada. Five Delegates led by Pastor Peters OMORAGBON were accredited on behalf of Nurses Across the Borders. Others included: Huzi MSHELIA, Prudence UWADIAE, Uwaila IKPONMWONBA and Peace UDENSI.

2006 February 24 – 26 2006: Nurses Across the Borders as full member to the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Status with ECOSOC participated at the Governing Council Meeting of the Body in the UN HQTRS. In New York. May 1 till 12 2006: Accredited delegates to the United Nations 14th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development at the UN Headquarters in New York and Pastor Peters OMORAGBON and Mr. Martin IDEMUDIA represented the Organization at the Event. May 29 to June 2006: Nurses Across the Borders were FULL participants to the United Nations General Assembly on HIV/AIDS at the UN HQTRS in New York, to mark 25 years of the Campaign against HIV/AIDS June 19 – 20 2006: Participated at the INUAGURAL MEETING OF THE UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICT) and DEVELOPMENT held in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. June 21 – 22: Accredited and participated at the INFORMAL INTERACTIVE HEARINGS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON LEAST DEVELOPED Countries June 29 to July 5th 2006: Participated at the United Nations High Level ECOSOC Meeting on Employment held in United Nations Headquarters in Geneva June 29 to 30 2006: Participated at the CIVIL SOCIETY FORUM TO ECOSOC LEVEL SEGMENT – Creating an Environment at the National and International Levels Conducive to Generating full and Productive Employment and Decent Work for all, and its impact on Sustainable Development, Geneva, Switzerland December 13 2006: Marked the WORLD AIDS DAY with an Awareness Campaign interactive session organized for students of TOPMOST Secondary School, Maryland, Lagos. * Currently collaborating with the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN) in the execution of the World Bank Assisted Project on: HIV/AIDS PREVENTION & CARE (HAPAC) ongoing

ACTIVITIES FOR 2007 January 16th – February 9th 2007: Participated in the 45th Session of January 21 – 27th 2007: Participated at Training of Trainers Workshop on: DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT organized by the Open Society Institute, Budapest Hungary February 26th – 9th March 2007: Participated at the 51st Session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the UN Headquarters New York Ms. Clara WAKAMA, Peace UDENSI and Pastor Peter OMORAGBON represented the Organization at the event April 22nd – 24th 2007: The First African Civil Society Forum organized by conference of NGOs in Consultative Status – CONGO in collaboration with the African Union, Economic Commission on Africa – ECA held in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. Nurses Across the Borders Presented a Paper on: PEACE & SECURITY THROUGH DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT BY PASTOR PETERS OMORAGBON – Executive President / CEO. May 1st – 12th 2007: Mr. John OBASUYI, Ms. Roseline IDEMUDIA, Barrister Mshelia HUZI and Mrs. Tina HUZI and Pastor Peters OMORAGBON represented the organization. June 3rd – 9th 2007: Attended the training Workshop on: MAINSTREAMING THE MINORITY RIGHTS – Under Diversity Management organized by the Open Society Institute, Budapest Hungary. July 21st – 27th 2007: Participated at the 2nd Nigerian Diaspora Day and Science and Technology Conference at Abuja Nigeria. August 28th – 29th 2007: Actively participated at the Board Meeting of the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations CONGO at the International Telecommunication Union Secretariat in Geneva. At this meeting, NABHI proposed the setting up of the African Regional Committee of CONGO. November 27 – December 10 2007 Collaborated and coordinated with the Nigerian Nurses Association of the USA, for Medical Mission to Nigeria of Ten Specialist Nurses to Organize an Scientific Workshop for Medical and Health Workers on: The Emerging Trends in the Prevention, Treatment and Management of HIV Infection. This was followed by an Open Health Fair for Free Voluntary Counseling and Testing in Benin City and Abuja. We were granted audience by the wife of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria-Hajia Turai Yar Adua at the State House Abuja.

2008 Feb. –Mar. 2008: Participated in the 52nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the UN Headquarters in New York. July 23-27 2008: Coordinated the launching of The Nurses Forum-that brought together Nigerian Nurses from the USA, Canada, and the UK at the Nigeria Diaspora Day Event in Tinapa Calabar. Here, NABHI collaborated with the Institute of Human Virology for the provision of FREE VCT SERVICES to all the participants at the event September 27 2008: Nurses Across the Borders in collaboration with the Nigerian Nurses Association of USA-New York, and Bank PHB Nigeria PLC co-hosted the Nigerian Independence Day Parade to mark Nigeria’s 48th Year Anniversary as an Independent State. Free Medical Services was offered to the numerous guests at the event at the Nigerian House in New York. November 29-Dec 2 2008: Amongst the few NGOs sponsored by the United Nations for the: Follow-Up International Conference on Financing for Development To Review the Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus. December 2 2008: In marking the 2008 World AIDS Day, Nurses Across the Borders organized a FREE HIV COUNSELING AND TESTING for the public at its Corporate Headquarters-295 Ikorodu Road, Idiroko Bus Stop Maryland. About 400 people participated and ONLY two were tested Positive. This exercise was in collaboration with the University of Maryland, USA Institute of Human Virology, the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria, Lagos State Agency for HIV/AIDS Control

2009 March 7 2009: Nurses Across the Borders in collaboration with the Nigerian Nurses Association Minnesota and sponsored by Bank PHB Nigeria, organized a Public Lecture on: Ending Domestic Violence against Women to the Nigerian Community in Minnesota. Participated at the 53rd Session of the United Commission on the Status of Women at the UN Headquarters in New York. May 21 2009: Nurses Across the Borders Humanitarian Initiative in collaboration with the Nigerian Nurses in the Diaspora, Center for the Right to Health and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria hosted the 2009 Nursing Excellence Award at Elomanz Hotel, Maryland Lagos, with a Public Lecture on: The Role of Nurses in Achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
